Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

In an effort to strengthen the security posture at UKZN, ICS will be implementing Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) for all UKZN students. This implementation will take a phased approach by selecting various groups of students at a time.

Multi-factor Authentication (MFA) is an authentication method that requires you to provide two or more verification factors to gain access to a resource such as an application, online account, email, or MS Teams. Rather than just asking for a username and password, MFA requires one or more additional verification factors, which decreases the likelihood of a successful cyber attack. MFA protects you by adding an additional layer of security, making it difficult for cybercriminals. This verification can occur via a text message sent to your mobile or by using an authenticator application on your mobile. The preferred method is the Authenticator application, which will perform the verification irrespective of where you are based,  whereas the SMS option will only work within South Africa.

ICS will commence with this implementation in July 2024, upon your return to campus. Students who wish to opt in now may use the attached guide and will not have to go through the process at a later stage.
